The name may either preserve the memory of a pearl fishery or enshrine a local legend: pearl oysters were once to be found in Hainan only 200 miles away. Treasure Pond, a small attractive island, round in shape and looking like a shining pearl, is the back door to Tai O, and from it a navigable creek runs down to Tai O town. Treasure Pond has a big temple, the Teung Hau Temple, with a shed for dragon boats; the head and tail are kept in the temple. On a low headland nearby is a ruined Chinese fort: its work is now done by an Indian guard, put there to control piracy in 1926.
