Tai O Heritage Hotel Open House 2026

Tai O Heritage Hotel is hosting its Open House from 22 to 25 May 2026, inviting the public to visit the Grade II historic building with over 120 years of history and explore Hong Kong’s first UNESCO-awarded hotel firsthand.

Presenting Roof Ridge Stages of Tai O

The Tai O Heritage Hotel Open House also commemorates the opening of the month-long exhibition ‘Presenting Roof Ridge Stages of Tai O’ (22 May ~ 22 June 2026), presenting the precious Shiwan ceramics on the roof ridges of temples at Tai O. Shiwan ceramic figurines are well known for their vibrant colours and vividly rendered forms. They have been widely used on traditional Lingnan architecture, adorning the roof ridges and gable walls of temples and ancestral halls. Arranged in narrative scenes, they constitute mises en scène on roof ridges to depict various stories from Chinese folklore.  Shiwan ceramics artistry has been inscribed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and treasured for its profound cultural and conservation significance.

The hotel is co-curating with Dr So-Mui Ma, a venerable scholar of historical architectural ornamentation, the photo exhibition featuring the intricate craftsmanship of Shiwan ceramics preserved on the roof ridges of Tai O Kwan Tai Temple.  A special exhibition ‘Amongst the Blessings’ will be presented alongside to showcase Dr Ma’s ceramic art pieces inspired by various bat motifs, introducing the distinctive charm of traditional Chinese aesthetics. Furthermore, we are partnering with Mr Stanley Wong, Chairperson of the Tai O Cultural Association and a local Tai O artist, on a series of activities introducing this cultural treasure to the public.

During the four-day Open House, the hotel will offer complimentary guided tours (time slots: 3:00pm, 3:30pm and 4:00pm) supplemented with AR (augmented reality) and audio guides, enabling visitors to travel back in time and learn about the history and original vista of the building as the Old Tai O Police Station. An AR experience will also be available at Tai O Kwan Tai Temple, bringing the opera stage on the ridges to life for visitors to explore this cultural gem.

In addition to savouring authentic Tai O delicacies prepared with local ingredients at the hotel’s glass-roofed restaurant, Tai O Lookout, visitors can create a limited-edition postcard by simply liking our Facebook page, following us on Instagram or Xiaohongshu. They can also join our workshops, including mould-pressing, rubbing and silk-screen printing experiences, to create unique keepsakes and to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the Tai O fishing village.
